5 HAVC Troubleshooting Tips That Every Homeowner Should Know

When an HVAC system fails, all is not lost. Here are five ways to troubleshoot minor problems like a boss.

Check the Power

If your HVAC system ever fails to power up, the problem could be a blown fuse. To troubleshoot this issue, go to the fuse box, and flip the breaker that’s powers your AC unit. Then, flip the breaker again, wait a few seconds, and try to power up your HVAC system again.

Reset

In some cases, you can resolve a performance problem by resetting your AC system. Heat pumps, air conditioners, and furnaces all have a reset button. If you’ve never reset your HVAC system before, you’ll find the instructions in the maintenance section of the owner’s manual. You can also get instructions online if you visit the manufacturer’s website and enter the unit’s model number.

Check the Thermostat

A faulty thermostat can cause a variety of problems. If your system turns off at the wrong time or does not power up at all, the culprit is probably the thermostat. Battery-powered thermostats will often malfunction in this manner, so if your thermostat is battery-powered, check the batteries. You may need to replace them if they’re low on power.

Change the Filter

If your HVAC system is producing low-quality air, less air, or hardly any air, the culprit is mostly likely a clogged air filter. There are different rules for different filters, so keep this in mind when you perform filter maintenance. For example, a disposable filter should be replaced every three to four months.

Turn Off the Unit

When key components start to freeze, an HVAC unit will fail to produce cool air. There is a way to overcome this. First, power the unit down and allow it to rest. Then, restart the system on the Fan setting. After the unit runs for a while, run the system a second time on the regular setting. If this does not resolve the problem, it’s time to call an AC technician.
